Free Ringette Tips from Lisa Lane Brown

  • I learned a rule in my second year of Junior AA that every ringette player should know. Ready? “If you receive the ring over the offensive blue line, ALWAYS drive to the net.” We call this rule, “Drive and Thrive.” You may not always shoot, but you should always drive to the net at top speed.
  • To successfully get the ring out of your own end, your two defenders and center need to work as a unit.Good defensive support can be the difference between getting a scoring chance or losing the ring deep in your own end.

“Support your cohort” is what you do as the non-ring carrying defender or centre to help the ring carrier get out of trouble. A support pass is not necessarily one that moves your team closer to the other team’s net right away. Rather, it is a pass that gets the ring carrier out of trouble so the new ring carrier can make the good break-out pass.

  • Some of the most stressful moments of a ringette game are the last 10 minutes when you are in the lead and trying to keep it that way. Here is a tip to help…

My ringette team this year only has three defenders, so sometimes we have to play a forward on defence. As soon as we did this, we started getting scored on – at times we shouldn’t have been! It took us the entire game to realize that the other team was getting “odd man rushes” on our net (3 vs. 2 and 2 vs. 1 scoring chances) and that’s why we were losing.

This experience made me realize the tiny things defenders do to prevent goals all game long. One of the most important — and, I realized, most difficult — is staying goal side

  • Without a doubt, skating is the master skill of ringette. If you become a slightly better skater, you will become a MUCH better ringette player. This is also true for goalies.

As you perfect your basic stance, your t-pushing, your telescoping, and your shuffling, you will become formidable in the net. We call become a great skater in the net, “Movement Improvement.” The better you skate, the better you move, and the better you save the ring.

  • The best (and easiest) way to score on a ringette triangle is to exhaust and demoralize the defenders with smart passing. There is a really cool concept you’ll want to use with your line mates in the offensive end to accomplish this. It’s called the L Offence.

I’m going to show you right now how to use it to create lethal scoring chances (don’t miss the two DVD clips at the end).

  • Q. This is sort of embarrassing, but I find that my players don’t listen to me as intently as I would like. What can I do?

    A. When players don’t listen, this is a form of resistance.

I think that female players’ show resistance to being coached shows up in passive ways like lack of listening. (If you’re used to coaching men, you may be used to other forms of resistance…)
